The optimal functioning of the muscles of the oral area and their sensitivity is most important for the oral motor system. It can influence the pronunciation and the position of the teeth. Parents should not let a child suck a rubber teat, fingers or a thumb for too long. Try to gradually stop this behaviour, preferably around the age of 2 (or even earlier).

If your child is able to drink from a normal cup it is important to stop the use of a bottle. Using a tightly closed mug and a flat plastic straw (better than a sippy cup) is advisable in necessary cases, for example when travelling by car. Using a straw is good exercise to strengthen the muscles of the mouth and tongue and it meets the child’s need to suck. For older children: chewing gum or eating an apple (not peeled) both improve the oral motor system.
