It often happens that a child sucks on a pacifier, thumb, or fingers for a longer period. An abnormal positioning of teeth is often the result. If untreated, the effects later in life can be much more severe than with early intervention. The speech therapist can help by advising the parents how to stop the suckle habits and by giving exercises to train the palate / lip / tongue muscles. In addition, offering different kinds of food may sometimes also have a positive effect on the improvement of the mouth muscles.
Sometimes a "trainer" is provided, which is a silicone mouth guard which guides the tongue into the correct position. The trainer also helps to put teeth into the correct position. This is not an orthodontic treatment, since our therapy is aimed at the function of the lips, tongue and mouth. During therapy the correct swallowing technique will be taught, so that the tongue no longer comes against or between the teeth. This allows the position of the teeth to improve which will in turn improve any future orthodontic treatment.
