Each child sometimes stutters during several stages of his or her language development. The child is trying to use the learned language. This causes hitches. In 80 percent of the cases this will pass by. Twenty percent will continue to stutter and it is important to keep an eye on the child in question. Stuttering can have different causes. Make sure you child gets your full attention when it tells you something and let it finish the story. When stuttering continues for a longer period of time (more than 6 to 8 weeks), becomes serious or sounds tense, it is advisable to consult a speech therapist, specialized in stutter therapy. The speech therapist can advice if your child needs therapy. Don’t wait too long to consult a speech therapist. A beginning stutterer is easier to treat than the one already stuttering for some time.
